Saikouba Ceesay of Gambia Armed Forces Football Club says he is confident of winning the Gambia Football Federation Division One top goal scorer honours following his brilliant run in the Gambia top-flight league this season. “If I didn’t see myself, I wouldn’t have said that. My target is to win it and I am sure I will win it by God’s grace,” Saikouba said.
The former Brikama United player was recently named Player of the Month by the Gambia Player Association and Gambia Football Federation after clinching the best player of the Month award.
An elated Ceesay said; “I feel so happy about it because it is one of the targets I set up for in this league since the beginning. I like to break records, so after hearing that I won the ‘Player of the Month’ honours, I am actually very, very happy”. Despite scoring 13 goals, a visibly disappointed Saikouba was not lucky to join the senior national team in their training camp in Turkey for preparations towards their first AFCON appearance slated for 2022 in Cameroon.
“This is something I cannot understand. I was only lucky with the Under 23 team, and I have not been fortunate to be included in any other national team since then. I am therefore trying to work harder to be recognized in the senior national team.“ My target this year was to play in the AFCON,” the former Brikama United star concluded. Ceesay was the second-leading scorer in the 2015/16 season, and he is currently leading the top goalscorer chart this season after banking 13 goals. Papis Nyassi, also of Brikama United, has scored 11 goals so far this season, followed by Gambia Ports Authority talisman Kebba Manneh, who has 7 goals to his name.
